1. What is your all time favorite flower?
I love all flowers and believe each has a place and a season through the year. I know that Dena loves a cottage garden look so this spring I concentrated on Foxgloves (Digital purpurea), Columbine (Aquilegia formosa), Peonies (Paeonia hybrids), Geraniums, Bearded Iris, Shasta Daisy's (Leucanthemum) Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and of course, lots of Roses. Her favorite is Rosa 'Double Delight'.
2. What do you want Dena to feel when she comes out into the garden?
Dena is one of hardest working woman I know and when she gets a chance to come out into the garden I hope that the colors, fragrances and views of the garden give her a chance to refresh and relax during her busy day.
3. Do you have favorite color combinations that you like to use?
Dena loves purples of all shades, mauves, lavenderswhites, pinks, Apricots. And now and then I add a soft yellow such as Rosa 'Julia Childs', a great performer in the garden.
4. What plant is easy for someone to take care of that doesn't have a green thumb?
Since we have such a large garden we need to have a lot plants that take care of themselves and don't need a lot of fuss. Geranium 'Biokovo' is a low growing border plant that blooms most of the year, Nepeta 'Walker's Low' (Catmint) is another great border plant. Many people mistake it for Lavender. Nepeta needs a quick hair cut in July and December then flushes back out in blossoms. Santa Barbara Daisy (Erigeron karvinskianus) and all the Hellebors are no fuss, long bloomers. And believe it or not, Roses are relatively low maintenance. We feed them through the spring and summer and they give us reliable blossoms until November!
